Cairns Crew Christmas 2018
Hi Everyone
Season greetings to you all,
We are all looking forward to winding down and relaxing after another busy end to the year. We started 2018 with a very enjoyable 2 week holiday to the eastern NSW coastal towns (Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Forster) and a week in Sydney where we spent quality time with Mick, Neen, Mam and Sean and Yaz.

Connor finished grade 12 this year so he is the first of our three boys to finish high school. He has had a challenging year and had his sights on a career in the navy but alas he was not granted entry for medical reasons so it wasn’t meant to be. He will have a gap year in 2019 and work part time including learning the ropes of lifeguarding as well as continuing working out at the gym.
Aidan had another enjoyable year and had a big growth spurt. He continued his success on the track with wins locally in the 1500m and the 800m as per the last few years. He then went onto place 4th in the U16 800m and 1500m at the QLD State Championships. He played basketball for the local U16 Redlynch Roar team and they won the local competition. He had a reasonable year academically in Grade 10 and has an indicated an interest in Engineering so we will see how that develops in the next few years.
Bryce had a very successful year sporting wise and also enjoyed his first year at high school. In early March he travelled with John and the North QLD Branch Surf Lifesaving Team to Alexandra Headlands in the Sunshine Coast for his second Junior State Championships. He had some great results and achieved 9th in the Surf Swim race. He also went to Brisbane later in March and competed at the QLD Junior Swimming Championships.
He achieved very well at the local Surf Life saving carnivals throughout the year and was selected in the QLD Country SLS team and competed in the Sunshine Coast again in December. He will get back into training hard in the New Year with the North QLD Branch Surf Lifesaving Team and John and Bryce are looking forward to attending the QLD Junior SLS State Championships again in early March 2019 at Burleigh Mowbray in the Gold Coast.

Marilyn has ended off the year finishing up in her role as Club Administrator at the Cairns SLS club after six years in the role. She was thanked for her dedication and commitment to the club and she is looking forward to a well-earned break over Christmas and in the New Year. Her highlights have been the trip to NSW, attending the State swimming and running events with Bryce and Aidan, seeing Kendrick Lamar with Connor and Aidan in Sydney and early morning paddle training at Palm Cove when she was able to fit them in.
John enjoyed his age manager role for Bryce’s U13 age group at Cairns SLS Club again. He unfortunately developed Glaucoma in his left eye and he had to take a trip to visit Bonnie and Karl and the girls in Wellington to have an operation with a leading NZ Ophthalmologist that Bonnie works for. He has had another busy year managing a couple of design projects for Council and will be involved with developing the Cairns Gallery Precinct next year. He is looking forward to some downtime over the Christmas and New Year’s break with Maz and the boys and extended Woods family and a healthier 12 months ahead.
We hope you all have an enjoyable Christmas and happy year in 2019.
Lots of Love
John, Maz, Connor, Aidan & Bryce
Always good to refresh our memories on the busy active lifestyle each member of the family has.
Well done to the Menzies Cairns clan.
Hope 2019 is full of love, laughter, good family times, and many happy surprises.
